In case of emergency, dial 999 or 112, then ask for ‘Police’ then ‘Mountain Rescue’.

The aim of last night’s Tuesday training was to test the teams open moorland navigation capability during darkness. The rendezvous was the Rescue Centre and members were deployed in teams on arrival via the two land rovers, over to the Yelverton airfield.

The team organiser Julian, had also thrown in a curveball advising that our usual control vehicle 04 would not be available and that the Command centre for the evening was our latest vehicle Dart 74.

Once Teams were at their start location, the radio operator called in to obtain a grid reference and point of interest to navigate to. On arrival at this location, it was radioed in and a new grid reference and feature was sent. The evening progressed as teams navigated their way across the airfield each taking it in turn to be the navigator.

The evening covered many of the team’s operational training standards and was a good chance to practice micro navigation using the tools that we have available to us. It also gave the team a chance to practice the logistics of team movement using our vehicles.
